What is heaven like according to Jesus?

What is the kingdom of heaven like according to Jesus? My favorite parable of His is Matthew 13:44. Jesus states, "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."

The first observation I make of Jesus' words is the word "treasure". He describes heaven like a treasure. Treasure is wealth, riches or something highly valuable and highly prized. Treasure is something we cherish. So, according to Jesus, heaven is a place to be highly valued, highly prized and highly cherished.

How much should heaven be treasured by someone? How valuable is heaven? Jesus tell's us a story to help us understand how valuable heaven is. It is hard to wrap your mind around how valuable something is if you can't put your eye's on it. Luckily, Jesus has been there and He can tell us.

Jesus tell's us a story about this man who found this treasure covered up, when he realized the value of this treasure what did he do? "In his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." I believe the point that Jesus is making here is this: Heaven is infinitely more valuable than anything I own or could own.

Look at this man's emotion - "joy". He sold all that he had in "joy". What is "joy"? Joy is the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying (dictionary.com). This man found great delight and happiness because he found heaven to be exceptionally more good and satisfying when compared to his stuff. When he found heaven he found the real source for gladness, pleasure and happiness.

How does one find this treasure called heaven? To find heaven, one must find Jesus Christ. Why? To get to heaven one must go through Jesus by faith (John 14:6). To get there you must be saved, what does that mean? It means you have put your faith in Jesus and value Jesus more than anything. It means that you have found Jesus to be exceptionally more good and satisfying that anything you own and anyone you know. When you treasure Jesus more than anyone and anything, when you see Jesus more exceptionally good and satisfying than your possessions and the people in your life, you have found the treasure of heaven.
