No Knowledge of God
If you would turn on the news chances are you will be bombarded by headlines dealing with murder, all kinds of violent acts, sexual misconduct and scandals. The news is depressing. How did we get here? I want to show you using a story from the Bible.
There is a book in the Bible called Hosea. Hosea was a prophet and he was known as the 'death-bed prophet'. His story is particularly interesting. He was the last of the prophets before the northern kingdom fell to Assyria. He prophesied during a time that Israel was prosperous and that prosperity eventually lead to moral decay.
Hosea was commanded by God to marry a "wife of whoredom" (Hosea 1:2), in order to serve as an example of Israel's unfaithfulness to God. Israel committed this adultery because they turned from a God who loved them to worshiping false gods. In essence it is Israel cheating on God with false gods.
How did they get to that point? Hosea 4:1 writes, "There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land." Israel was not true to the Word of God, their love for God was wavering and they had not acquaintance with truths of God. Here is what resulted, "there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed." In other words, violence resulted. When there is no faithfulness to God, no steadfast love for God and no knowledge of God wickedness and violence shall abound.
Let's ask this, why was there no faithfulness to God, no love for God and no knowledge of God? The answer lies in Hosea 4:4, "Yet let no one contend, and let none accuse, for with you is my contention, O priest." God points out the problem with the land are the priests. Those responsible for teaching, representing and mediating the Word of God to the people of Israel. There was no faithfulness, no love and no knowledge of God because the priest did not know God, did not represent God and did not teach the Word of God.
The result is this, "My people (Israel) are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you (the priest) have rejected knowledge" (Hos. 4:6). When the priest rejected knowing God, the people of Israel did not know God and violence followed. Based on Hosea, my conclusion is then - when knowledge of God is absent crime is present. Something to think about.
