The Work of The Spirit in The World: Satan is judged.

Jesus said in John 16:8 that when the Holy Spirit comes into the world he will come to "convict the concerning sin and righteousness and judgment." In two recent blogs we dealt with sin and righteousness, now lets look at judgment. What does it mean that the Spirit is coming into the world to pronounce the world guilty regarding judgment?

Let's look at the word "judgment" for a moment. Judgment is defined as the act of instance of judging, or to give a verdict. So the Spirit has come into the world to deliver a verdict. This is no verdict given from just any ordinary judge. This is a diving judgment given by a divine Sovereign. It is a verdict given to condemn our sin nature or a positive verdict for righteousness.

Why is the Holy Spirit coming into the world regarding judgment? Jesus answer's this question in John 16:11; he would say that the Spirit is coming into the "concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged." The ruler of this world is Satan (Eph. 2:2 & 2 Cor. 4:4) and the Spirit has come into the world to deliver God's verdict on him. And the judgment Satan receives is a verdict of condemnation for two reasons.

Reason number one is that Satan deceives so many. Paul stated in Ephesians 1 & 2, "And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience." Thus the people in Ephesus were dead in sin because Satan deceived them into following him. Secondly, Satan is judged because he has blinded the minds of many from seeing the light of the gospel in Jesus. Paul points this out in 2 Corinthians 4:4, "In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." Thus Satan is judged for keeping people from seeing the only way they can be saved, Jesus.

However, it is not only Satan who shall be judged but those who have made a practice of sin. John stated in 1 John 3:8a, "Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning." Those who are not of Christ are of Satan. And they shall receive the same verdict and same fate that awaits the devil. Do not be a child of the devil.

The good news is Jesus came into the world to destroy Satan's work. 1 John 3:8 continues, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." Jesus came into the world destroy everything Satan was attempting to accomplish. Now the Spirit has come to serve Satan with papers of condemnation. My prayer for you, if you do not know Jesus, is that the Spirit would intervene in your life, lead you to Jesus by opening the eye's of your heart and seeing Jesus as the "image of God" (2 Cor. 4:4).
