The Work of The Spirit in The World: No One Is Righteous.

The most recent blog I presented was that the Spirit is in the world to help us hit the mark God has set for us and that is to believe in Jesus Christ, and when we do not that is sin. It is titled: 'The Work of The Spirit in The World: Missing The Mark', if you would like to read it and have not. I want to start this blog out by telling you that you are not a good person. Great news! And that is what the Holy Spirit has come into the world to convict you of. Let's explain that.

Jesus said in John 16:8 "And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment." One of the area's that the Spirit has come to pronounce the world guilty is righteousness. Righteousness means morally right or virtuous. What Jesus is saying is that the Spirit has come into the world to convict us regarding our moral uprightness.

Why does the Spirit need to come into the world concerning righteousness? Jesus answer's that question with John 16:10, "concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer." In other words, Jesus is not going to be around much longer and the Spirit is coming into the world to help the disciples understand the way of righteousness.

Let's ask this question, why do we need to be convicted of righteousness? It is not because we are righteous but because we are unrighteous. I have said this already but a reminder will not hurt, no one is good. This is true at least in the sight of God. We may be good to our grandmother, our spouse or our children but in the sight of God, no one is righteous.

It will not help us to compare ourselves to other's. We must see ourselves through God's eyes. Psalm 14:2,3 gives us that glimpse. "The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one." God is looking down from heaven into earth and what does He see? He sees that all the inhabitants of earth have turned aside from Him, become corrupt and there is no one who does good. Romans 3:9 echoes this by saying, "For we have already charged that all....are under sin".

The reason the Spirit was sent into the world is to lead us to Jesus. Why? So that we might stand before a holy and blameless and righteous God as righteous. That's right. The only way we can be made righteous is by faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 3:22).

The other reason that the Spirit has come to convict concerning righteousness is that a day is quickly approaching where God will judge the world in righteousness. Acts 17:31 states, "because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead." Thus, God has fixed a day that all the world will be judged by His righteousness and Jesus will be the persuasion for the verdict. If one is found to be in Christ, he will receive the verdict of life, but if one is not found to be in Christ, they shall stand condemned. Therefore, because God's desire is for us to be saved He sent His Spirit. The Spirit has come into the world to convict us of our unrighteousness in the sight of a holy God and to lead to us Jesus that we might be found righteous in God's sight by faith in Jesus.
